MOGADISHU: A car bomb took place in a market in Mogadishu on Sunday that killed at least 39 people and injured nearly 50.
According to the mayor of Wadajir, Ahmed Abdulle Afrax, the car was driven by a suicide bomber.
“We carried 39 dead bodies and there were many others injured,” Dr Abdikadir Abdirahman, director of the Aamin Ambulance Service.
Madina hospital received 47 injured people, Dr Mohamed Yusuf, the manager, said.
According to a witness named Abdulle Omar the target of the attacker was the market that has been now destroyed.
“I was staying in my shop when a car came in into the market and exploded. I saw more than 20 people lying on the ground. Most of them were dead,” he said.
Authorities suggest that the Islamist insurgent Al Shabaab group, fighting against the U.N.-backed Somali government is responsible for the attack.
